Jonathan Barnett, the agent of Real Madrid star, Gareth Bale, has defended the winger after he was criticized by the Los Blancos’ fans for his performance against Barcelona in the Classico over the weekend.
Bale was substituted during Real Madrid’s 1-0 defeat to Barcelona in the La Liga encounter on Saturday at the Santiago Bernabeu and suffered whistles and jeers from his own supporters.
But Barnett believes Bale deserved the greatest respect from Madrid fans, adding that their treatment on the Wales international was “a disgrace”.
Speaking ahead of Real Madrid’s Champions League round of 16 second-leg tie with Ajax on Tuesday night, Barnett told Sky Sports: “His generation of Real fans will be talking about Gareth’s goals for years to come. Frankly, they should be ashamed of themselves.
“Gareth deserves the greatest of respect. The way the Real fans have treated Gareth is nothing short of a disgrace.
“In the six years he has been in Spain, he has won everything. He is one of the best players in the world. Those fans should be kissing his feet.”
Bale has won the Champions League four times with Real Madrid after joining for a club-record 100 million Euros ($113 million) fee in 2013.
The 29-year-old has failed to win over supporters despite scoring crucial goals for the club and has been criticised in the media for failing to learn Spanish and integrate with his teammates.
